{"id":1338,"date":"2018-03-05T08:00:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-04T21:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hopeuc.com\/au\/?p=1338"},"modified":"2018-02-28T10:24:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T23:24:46","slug":"reboot-week-four","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hopeuc.com\/au\/2018\/03\/05\/reboot-week-four\/","title":{"rendered":"REBOOT \/\/ Week Four"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">This week\u2019s topic is demonstrated in a relatively short story, at least in it\u2019s telling. Like many stories there was a lot that happened over many years prior. Hannah\u2019s story sits at the beginning of 1 Samuel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a whole book 1 Samuel records the transition of the people of Israel from the period of judges to a monarchy. As such Hannah\u2019s story might appear to be minor, a small explanation of how Samuel became the prophet who anointed kings. If we look more closely though, we may see how her story is a beacon to a nation asking the question, \u2018What does it mean to trust God in difficult circumstances?\u2019 You can read it all in 1 Samuel chapters 1-3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. Because the Lord had closed Hannah\u2019s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah would say to her, \u201cHannah, why are you weeping? Why don\u2019t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don\u2019t I mean more to you than ten sons?\u201d 1 Samuel 1:1-8<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hannah has been unable to have children, which is clearly her desire. Why is Peninnah provoking her?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While we know that comparing our lives with others is generally not helpful, why do we do it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Her husband, Elkanah, attempted to comfort her. What approach does he use and why might this not be effective?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Does \u2018the Lord had closed Hannah\u2019s womb\u2019 reflect how are we understand infertility today? How might we phrase Hannah\u2019s situation today?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What impact might that have on how and when we pray?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord\u2019s house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, \u201cLord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant\u2019s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, \u201cHow long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNot so, my lord,\u201d Hannah replied, \u201cI am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Eli answered, \u201cGo in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She said, \u201cMay your servant find favor in your eyes.\u201d Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, \u201cBecause I asked the Lord for him.\u201d 1 Samuel 1:9-20<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Though it was not Hannah\u2019s intention to be seen praying, what is the impact of her encounter with the priest Eli?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When you think about some of your conversations with God about desires and dreams, are there some that have only ever been voiced inside your head?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Eli is not told the details and yet he says \u2018may God grant you what you have asked\u2019. What do you think was his motivation for saying this?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In what way is the naming of Samuel significant?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, \u201cAfter the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cDo what seems best to you,\u201d her husband Elkanah told her. \u201cStay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his word.\u201d So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, and she said to him, \u201cPardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.\u201d And he worshiped the Lord there. 1 Samuel 1:21-28<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hannah is true to her promise. It\u2019s hard to begin to imagine how difficult it would be to take your own child to another family and hand him over, effectively for adoption, having spent such a short time with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What might you expect Hannah to be feeling at this point?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">How would you expect Eli, the priest, to react to being presented with Samuel?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then Hannah prayed and said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy heart rejoices in the Lord;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">in the Lord my horn is lifted high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My mouth boasts over my enemies,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">for I delight in your deliverance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere is no one holy like the Lord;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">there is no one besides you;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">there is no Rock like our God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cDo not keep talking so proudly<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">or let your mouth speak such arrogance,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">for the Lord is a God who knows,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and by him deeds are weighed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe bows of the warriors are broken,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but those who stumbled are armed with strength.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Those who were full hire themselves out for food,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but those who were hungry are hungry no more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She who was barren has borne seven children,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but she who has had many sons pines away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Lord brings death and makes alive;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">he brings down to the grave and raises up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Lord sends poverty and wealth;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">he humbles and he exalts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He raises the poor from the dust<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and lifts the needy from the ash heap;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">he seats them with princes<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and has them inherit a throne of honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFor the foundations of the earth are the Lord\u2019s;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">on them he has set the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt is not by strength that one prevails;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">those who oppose the Lord will be broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Most High will thunder from heaven;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cHe will give strength to his king<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and exalt the horn of his anointed.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>1 Samuel 2:1-10<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What emotions stand out in Hannah\u2019s prayer?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hannah\u2019s prayer is prophetic, it is a declaration of truth about God. What is the relationship between her declarations about God\u2019s character and the answer to her personal prayer?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">How can we get more specific in our own praise of God?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Is it likely that this was a spontaneous response to her circumstances, or more likely that it had been part of her conversation with God for years before the answer to her prayer?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If so, what impact might that have on how you approach prayer and praise?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But Samuel was ministering before the Lord\u2014a boy wearing a linen ephod. Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, \u201cMay the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the Lord.\u201d Then they would go home. And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord. 1 Samuel 2:15-21<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hannah\u2019s prayer was answered beyond what she asked for. The significance of Samuel as a prophet and leader of God\u2019s people is perhaps why we know her story. However, her faith and faithfulness undoubtedly helped to shape Samuel\u2019s character and his trust in God, and is a great example of bringing the desires of our heart to God, even if it is a conversation that takes place over many years. Encouragingly, we also get a glimpse of how God is always able to do abundantly more than we can imagine at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Putting it into action:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Find a way to express your gratitude to God each day this week. Compose a prayer or song, keep a journal, or do something else that helps you praise God for his goodness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We are all called to be priests (Rev 1:6) so find opportunities to pray for and bless people around you this week, so that the prayers of their hearts may be heard and answered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s topic is demonstrated in a relatively short story, at least in it\u2019s telling.
